Music Monday – Love Runs Out – OneRepublic

Welcome to Music Monday! As many of you know, music contributes a great deal to my writing process. Whether it’s a song’s lyrics, beat, rhythm, or tone, I find myself constantly inspired by it.

writing-to-musicAs you might have (or might not have) noticed, I didn’t publish any blog posts last week. I decided to take some time off to relax, spend time with family, and work on my manuscript. It ended up being a great week. I took a day trip to Vail, visited the Denver Zoo with my nephews, and even won the Wicked lottery with my sister!

11666132_10102297028238983_2248675542357559971_nNot only did I have fun during my week off, but I made tons of progress with my new novel. I managed to write over 26,000 words in five days. Ahhh! Seriously, it’s amazing what you can do when you shut the world out and focus. Hopefully this major boost means I’ll be able to meet my goal of finishing a first draft by July 31st, when the first round of the NYC Midnight Flash Fiction Challenge kicks off.

Anyway, on to Music Monday! Today, I thought I’d share a song that helped inspire me as I wrote my booty off last week: OneRepublic’s “Love Runs Out”.

D96028B1249DC92023B3DF5A5443E7F9201421220339876The number one thing I love about this song is its rhythm and beat. It’s edgy, energetic, and even a little dark. Every time I listen to it, I close my eyes and get lost in the incessant thumping of the drums, piano, and cymbals. And every time it finishes, I realize I’ve thought of a new layer to my story. A new drama, a new twist, a new character trait, a new something.

one-republic-love-runs-out-music-video-2014As always, the lyrics provide oodles of inspiration as well. I didn’t really listen to them the first few times I played “Love Runs Out”, but then I Googled them and I realized they fit my story perfectly.

Ooh, we all want the same thing.
Ooh, we all run for something.
Oh for God, for fate,
For love, for hate,
For gold, and rust,
For diamonds, and dust.

I’ll be our light, your match, your burning sun,
I’ll be the bright and black that’s making you run.

Music Monday – Linkin Park – Bleed It Out

Welcome to Music Monday! As many of you know, music contributes a great deal to my writing process. Whether it’s a song’s lyrics, beat, rhythm, or tone, I find myself constantly inspired by it.

writing-to-musicA few months ago, a friend recommended a song on her fitness blog, Bigger Than Smaller. At first I thought, “Great workout song!”, but then I listened to it again and realized it could offer some excellent writing motivation in the future.

Well, the future has arrived. “Bleed It Out” by Linkin Park has become one of my favorite songs to listen to while I work on my new novel.

20140606014550!Bleed_It_Out_single The main thing I like about “Bleed It Out” is its rawness. While I listen to it, I’m able to experience my characters’ self-destructive natures, as well as their rage, frustration, and despair.

I bleed it out, go, stop the show
Choppy words in a sloppy flow
Shotgun, I pull, lock and load
Cock it back and then watch it go

Another things I love about this song is its rhythm and beat. Let’s face it, sometimes (okay, many times) writing can be an energy drain. Physically, mentally, emotionally–it can take a lot out of us, especially if we’re writing stories that “dig deeper” and deal with uncomfortable subject matters.

That’s why I enjoy listening to songs like “Bleed It Out”. Not only do they inspire my story, but they inspire me to keep writing, even if I’m exhausted.

NDA5R0RRQzRLWTQx_o_linkin-park---bleed-it-out-official-bootlegs-live-from-So, if you’re looking for an energetic song that inspires raw emotions, listen to “Bleed It Out” by Linkin Park.

Music Monday – Amen – Halestorm

Welcome to Music Monday! As many of you know, music contributes a great deal to my writing process. Whether it’s a song’s lyrics, beat, rhythm, or tone, I find myself constantly inspired by it.

writing-to-musicThis past weekend, I officially began working on my new novel. To help kickstart my journey, I listened to one of my new obsessions: “Amen” by Halestorm.

halestormintothewildlifecd_638The number one thing I love about this song is its attitude. It’s great inspiration to help me develop my protagonist, who’s anything but an angel. He’s rebellious, selfish, and arrogant. He does what he wants when he wants. And he refuses to be controlled by others. Basically, he walks through life giving others the middle finger salute.

And this song is perfect to inspire that kind of “eff you” character.

I  also really like “Amen”s lyrics. They inspire all kinds of emotions and ideas:

A fire’s gotta burn
The world is gonna turn
A rain has gotta fall
Fate is gonna call
But I just keep on breathing
Long as my heart is beating

Someone’s gotta hate
It’s never gonna change
Gets harder everyday
This is one hell of a place
Keep your heart from freezing
To keep yourself believing

If you’re looking for an energetic, rebellious song that’s full of attitude, then check out Halestorm’s “Amen”.

Music Monday – Take Me Away – Avril Lavigne

Welcome to Music Monday! As many of you know, music contributes a great deal to my writing process. Whether it’s a song’s lyrics, beat, rhythm, or tone, I find myself constantly inspired by it.

writing-to-musicOn my way home from work last Friday, I decided to put my iPod on shuffle (1800+ songs). For the first half of my drive, nothing grabbed my attention. It all sounded the same and blah, blah, blah. Then a song I haven’t heard in years popped up and I was obsessed with it all weekend.

Avril Lavigne’s “Take Me Away” has so many of the components I need to get motivated: rhythm, tone, lyrics. I actually used to listen to it all the time while writing in the past, but–somehow–I’d forgotten about it. I’m so happy I stumbled upon it again!

Avril-Lavigne-Take-Me-Away-FanMade-Single-Cover-avril-lavigne-34235851-1833-1833My favorite thing about this song is its raw emotions. While listening to it, I’m able to experience anger, sorrow, desperation, defeat, frustration…And then I’m able to take those darker feelings and infuse them into my work.

And, of course, I love this song’s lyrics. Whether it’s one line or many, I always find something in “Take Me Away” to spark my imagination and help with whatever story I’m working on.

All the pain I thought I knew
All the thoughts lead back to you
Back to what was never said
Back and forth inside my head
I can’t handle this confusion
I’m unable; come and take me away

Avril-Lavigne-BlackStar-Concert-05So, if you’re looking for a song to help inspire those darker, rawer emotions, check out “Take Me Away” by Avril Lavigne.

Music Monday – I Wanna Rock – Twisted Sister

Welcome to Music Monday! As many of you know, music contributes a great deal to my writing process. Whether it’s a song’s lyrics, beat, rhythm, or tone, I find myself constantly inspired by it.

writing-to-musicSince I spent last week working on random writing projects, I decided to once again keep things general today by spotlighting one of my “go-to” inspirational songs:

“I Wanna Rock” by Twisted Sister.

maxresdefaultI love listening to “I Wanna Rock” when I’m looking to infuse attitude in my writing. If I have a character who needs to act out, or stand up for themselves, or go against the grain, then I turn to this rock n’ roll song for inspiration.

“I Wanna Rock” also helps me develop conflicts in my stories.

I might not be a pushover in life, but I’m also not a conflict seeker: Soap opera drama. Fights. Backstabbing. Gossip. I avoid all of those things like the plague. Simply put, I don’t have patience for them.

Unfortunately, they make for great story fodder. So, in order for me to create and develop them, I need to listen to music that puts me in the Conflict Zone, like “I Wanna Rock” (or “We’re Not Gonna Take It”, another one of my Twisted Sister favorites).

twisted-sister-650-430So, if you’re looking for a song with lots of attitude and the power to put you in the “Conflict Zone”, then check out “I Wanna Rock” by Twisted Sister.

Music Monday – Shake It Out – Florence and the Machine

Welcome to Music Monday! As many of you know, music contributes a great deal to my writing process. Whether it’s a song’s lyrics, beat, rhythm, or tone, I find myself constantly inspired by it.

writing-to-musicLast week, I sent the third draft of my novel off to my beta readers. Along with it, I sent a note requesting they resist sending back their thoughts and critiques for at least two weeks. Cause I need a break!

As much as I love writing, there comes a point I need to stop, step back, and regain my breath (and sanity). So, that’s what I’ll be doing the next couple of weeks. However, just because I’m not working on a project at this very moment doesn’t mean I’m not listening to music and finding inspiration in it. That’s like asking me not to breathe!

So, today, I wanted to share one of my “go-to” songs by Florence and the Machine: “Shake It Out”.

98eafa9fThis is one of those songs that always ends up on my latest book playlist. No matter what story or character I’m creating, “Shake It Out” sparks my imagination, helps me deepen a plot, and pushes me to develop stronger emotions.

My favorite thing about this song is its lyrics.

And I’ve been a fool and I’ve been blind
I can never leave the past behind
I can see no way, I can see no way
I’m always dragging that horse around

In every story, there is some kind of conflict. Characters must overcome all kinds of obstacles, both physical and emotional. “Shake It Out” is a great song to listen to when working through those conflict-driven scenes and developing the emotions your characters experience.

Music Monday – Shatter Me – Lzzy Hale and Lindsey Stirling

Welcome to Music Monday! As many of you know, music contributes a great deal to my writing process. Whether it’s a song’s lyrics, beat, rhythm, or tone, I find myself constantly inspired by it.

writing-to-musicWell, after a couple of crazy months of writing, I’m finally returning to a semi-normal blog schedule.

I apologize for being AWOL the past couple of weeks. It’s been a little rough…But, more about that later. Let’s hop into today’s Music Monday!

So, last week I participated in the first round of the Short Story Challenge 2015. As usual, it was a tough experience, but a good one. I’ll be sharing more about it in a post tomorrow. Today, I want to share a song that helped motivate me while working on my story for the contest.

While struggling through my first draft, I took a break and pulled up YouTube in hopes of finding some much needed inspiration. And I did when “Shatter Me” featuring Lzzy Hale and Lindsey Stirling popped up.

LindseyStirlingShatterMeCD-1The moment this music video began playing, I was infatuated with it. The imagery, tone, and words were exactly what I needed to see/hear to give my lagging story a swift kick in the rear.

Not only did “Shatter Me” help me tap into the raw emotions of my characters (anger, resentment, fear, sorrow), but it sparked my imagination with its amazing music video. I loved the shattering theme. It gave me some great ideas for my horror story’s morbid journey.

And, of course, “Shatter Me” has amazing lyrics with the power to inspire all kinds of emotions and ideas.

I pirouette in the dark
I see the stars through a mirror
Tired mechanical heart
Beats ’til the song disappears

So, if your story needs a swift kick in the rear like mine did, or you’re just looking for a great song, check out “Shatter Me” with Lzzy Hale and Lindsey Stirling.

Music Monday – Bad Moon Rising – Creedence Clearwater Revival

Welcome to Music Monday! As many of you know, music contributes a great deal to my writing process. Whether it’s a song’s lyrics, beat, rhythm, or tone, I find myself constantly inspired by it.

writing-to-musicI know it’s Tuesday, but I was sick yesterday, so I’m going to pretend today is Monday for the sake of this post 😉

The past couple of days, I’ve been hooked on the classic “Bad Moon Rising” by Creedence Clearwater Revival.

Creedence+Clearwater+Revival+CCRWhen I create my playlist(s) for my stories, I tend to add songs that my characters would listen to. Why? Because it helps me develop them better. When I listen to their music, it helps me understand who they are and what their tone, attitude, and characteristics are. And “Bad Moon Rising” happens to be one of my protagonists’ favorite songs.

ee06b9e2c1109158f92fdec1901b277cI also enjoy this song because it’s a fun one to listen to when writing suspense or horror. “Bad Moon Rising” is all about disaster and mayhem, and I’ll admit, those elements often appear in my stories.

I hear hurricanes a blowing.
I know the end is coming soon.
I fear rivers over flowing.
I hear the voice of rage and ruin.

So, check out “Bad Moon Rising” by Creedence Clearwater Revival to see if it inspires you!

Music Monday – You Don’t Own Me – Lesley Gore

Welcome to Music Monday! As many of you know, music contributes a great deal to my writing process. Whether it’s a song’s lyrics, beat, rhythm, or tone, I find myself constantly inspired by it.

writing-to-musicLast week, I was completely obsessed with one of my favorite Malt Shop artists, Lesley Gore. It seemed no matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t stop listening to her music, not even the awesome “Sunshine, Lollipops and Rainbows”…Don’t worry, today’s Music Monday feature isn’t that yippity-dippity hit. It’s Gore’s much more dramatic and empowering “You Don’t Own Me”.

I fell in love with this song years and years ago, all the way back to when I was a kid and my aunt used to babysat me and my siblings. Whenever we’d go over to her house, she’d throw on Lesley Gore’s record, grab a spatula, and “serenade” us while we ate dinner. Usually her performance would end with all of us dancing around to “It’s My Party”.

However, it was my aunt’s theatrical rendition of “You Don’t Own Me” that stuck with me throughout the years. And lately, as I’ve been working on the edits for my manuscript, it’s become one of my obsessions.

“You Don’t Own Me” is one of those songs that inspires me purely on its attitude, empowerment, and drama. And Gore’s performance in the music video below is the cherry on top. So much spirit and spunk! Just watching her makes me feel strong, rebellious, and all “Don’t tell me what to do!” And I need to feel those types of emotions while working on my novel.

You+Dont+Own+Me+LiveSo, if you’re looking for a wonderful song that’s full of power, drama, and attitude, listen to Lesley Gore’s “You Don’t Own Me”.

Music Monday – Defying Gravity – Kerry Ellis

Welcome to Music Monday! As many of you know, music contributes a great deal to my writing process. Whether it’s a song’s lyrics, beat, rhythm, or tone, I find myself constantly inspired by it.

writing-to-music

Well, everyone, I finally finished my second draft!

*cue confetti*

As I wrote the final climatic scenes of my book over the weekend, I found myself listening to Kerry Ellis’s rock version of the hit song, “Defying Gravity” from the musical Wicked.

329915There have been many variations of this song recorded over the years, but this is one of my favorites. Kerry Ellis adds so much oomph and power to “Defying Gravity” with her explosive vocals and rock n’ roll gusto. It makes me want to stand up and rebel against those trying to drag me down and hold me back. And that was the exact feeling I needed while writing my final chapters.

24826-something-has-changed-within-me-something-is-not-the-sameNot only does this song have the right tone and attitude for those “defying” moments in your story, but it has the lyrics to inspire them as well. Simply put, they’re amazing.

I’m through accepting limits
’cause someone says they’re so
Some things I cannot change
But till I try, I’ll never know!

So if you’re looking for a song that sparks rebellion, gives strength, and infuses attitude, then check out this version of Defying Gravity!
