Music Monday – Ghost – Ella Henderson

Welcome to Music Monday! As many of you know, music contributes a great deal to my writing process. Whether it’s a song’s lyrics, beat, rhythm, or tone, I find myself constantly inspired by it.

writing-to-musicYes, I’m fully aware I’ve used “Ghost” as a previous Music Monday feature. But it was my number one inspiration this past weekend as I worked on my second round submission for the NYC Midnight Short Story Challenge 2015, so I had to use it again!

20140430100120!Ella_Henderson_-_GhostLast Friday, I woke up and looked at my assigned genre for round two:

Ghost Story…Gag!

Although it wasn’t the worst genre I could’ve received, it was definitely on my “Do Not Want” list. In my opinion, it’s hard to come up with a ghost story that’s original and surprising. Thankfully, on my way to work, I remembered I’d thought of a concept months before–a concept inspired by Ella Henderson’s “Ghost”.

I ended up watching the music video of “Ghost” over and over again while developing my story. I couldn’t help it. Every time I watched/listened to it, my foggy plot sharpened and my vague characters came to life. Between the imagery, the tone, and the lyrics, “Ghost” had everything I needed to get me motivated to write my story.

Each time that I think you go
I turn around and you’re creeping in
And I let you under my skin
‘Cause I love living in the sin

I highly recommend you watch/listen to “Ghost” by Ella Henderson. It’s great inspiration for all kinds of stories (not just ghost ones).

Music Monday – I Wanna Rock – Twisted Sister

Welcome to Music Monday! As many of you know, music contributes a great deal to my writing process. Whether it’s a song’s lyrics, beat, rhythm, or tone, I find myself constantly inspired by it.

writing-to-musicSince I spent last week working on random writing projects, I decided to once again keep things general today by spotlighting one of my “go-to” inspirational songs:

“I Wanna Rock” by Twisted Sister.

maxresdefaultI love listening to “I Wanna Rock” when I’m looking to infuse attitude in my writing. If I have a character who needs to act out, or stand up for themselves, or go against the grain, then I turn to this rock n’ roll song for inspiration.

“I Wanna Rock” also helps me develop conflicts in my stories.

I might not be a pushover in life, but I’m also not a conflict seeker: Soap opera drama. Fights. Backstabbing. Gossip. I avoid all of those things like the plague. Simply put, I don’t have patience for them.

Unfortunately, they make for great story fodder. So, in order for me to create and develop them, I need to listen to music that puts me in the Conflict Zone, like “I Wanna Rock” (or “We’re Not Gonna Take It”, another one of my Twisted Sister favorites).

twisted-sister-650-430So, if you’re looking for a song with lots of attitude and the power to put you in the “Conflict Zone”, then check out “I Wanna Rock” by Twisted Sister.

Music Monday – Chandelier – Sia

Welcome to Music Monday! As many of you know, music contributes a great deal to my writing process. Whether it’s a song’s lyrics, beat, rhythm, or tone, I find myself constantly inspired by it.

writing-to-musicI’ve spent the last couple of weeks taking a break from writing. I needed one after killing myself to finish my latest draft of my manuscript, and then killing myself to write a story for the first round of the NYC Midnight Short Story Challenge 2015.

As I’ve regained my strength and sanity, I’ve decided to take a few more weeks off from my manuscript to revise/expand one of the short stories I wrote during last year’s NYC Midnight SSC: “Over the Edge”.

To help me get back in the groove with this deranged-filled story, I’ve been listening to Sia’s “Chandelier”. (Well, and “Elastic Heart”, but I could only pick one for today’s Music Monday.)

sia-chandelier-cover-artWhen I first watched “Chandelier”s music video on YouTube a few months ago, I thought, “Meh, it’s okay.” Then it popped back up on my playlist a couple of weeks ago and–boom! Obsessed!

There’s something so raw and, well, weird about Sia’s work. I can’t help but be motivated by it.

Now, I’ll fully admit, my favorite thing about “Chandelier” is its music video and the dancer, Maddie Ziegler. I’ve never been so inspired by the art of dance. And I’ve never been able to use it to see my characters better.

Ziegler’s movements and expressions portray everything my characters are: Controlled, yet wild. Liberated, yet trapped. Stable, yet insane! It’s all so well done, and every time I watch it, I just want to stop what I’m doing and write!

So, if you’re looking to be inspired by music and dance, check out “Chandelier” by Sia!

Music Monday – Shake It Out – Florence and the Machine

Welcome to Music Monday! As many of you know, music contributes a great deal to my writing process. Whether it’s a song’s lyrics, beat, rhythm, or tone, I find myself constantly inspired by it.

writing-to-musicLast week, I sent the third draft of my novel off to my beta readers. Along with it, I sent a note requesting they resist sending back their thoughts and critiques for at least two weeks. Cause I need a break!

As much as I love writing, there comes a point I need to stop, step back, and regain my breath (and sanity). So, that’s what I’ll be doing the next couple of weeks. However, just because I’m not working on a project at this very moment doesn’t mean I’m not listening to music and finding inspiration in it. That’s like asking me not to breathe!

So, today, I wanted to share one of my “go-to” songs by Florence and the Machine: “Shake It Out”.

98eafa9fThis is one of those songs that always ends up on my latest book playlist. No matter what story or character I’m creating, “Shake It Out” sparks my imagination, helps me deepen a plot, and pushes me to develop stronger emotions.

My favorite thing about this song is its lyrics.

And I’ve been a fool and I’ve been blind
I can never leave the past behind
I can see no way, I can see no way
I’m always dragging that horse around

In every story, there is some kind of conflict. Characters must overcome all kinds of obstacles, both physical and emotional. “Shake It Out” is a great song to listen to when working through those conflict-driven scenes and developing the emotions your characters experience.

Music Monday – I Feel Everything – Idina Menzel

Welcome to Music Monday! As many of you know, music contributes a great deal to my writing process. Whether it’s a song’s lyrics, beat, rhythm, or tone, I find myself constantly inspired by it.

writing-to-musicSo, I haven’t been doing a ton of writing the past week. I’ve been mostly reading and critiquing stories on the NYC Midnight Short Story Challenge forum.

However, after watching Idina Menzel perform the National Anthem last night during the Super Bowl, I decided to share one of my favorite songs of hers. For years, “I Feel Everything” has been on almost every “book” playlist I’ve created. No matter what story I’m living in, this song inspires me.

*A funny/ironic side note: This morning, while writing this post, I got a notification that Taye Diggs started following me on Twitter. After an “OMG!” fangirl moment, I almost deleted what I’d written and chose a different song. But then I thought, “Yeah, like Taye Diggs is going to 1) visit your blog and read this post and 2) care you chose one of his ex-wife’s songs to spotlight.” And if he does…er…sorry! I’m too swamped to start over with a different song–ha! Plus, I love “I Feel Everything” and I want to share it with you.

41TUgArKtyL“I Feel Everything” is brimming with emotion and power. In fact, whenever I’m writing a scene that revolves around rage, revenge, or a big fight, I’ll blast this song (usually a few times in a row). It’s one of those songs where the more you listen to it, the more it moves you.

And, of course, the lyrics are amazing and always give me something to use to add depth to a plot or character.

When you can’t be touched
When you can’t be loved
When you fall apart
When you have no heart
I feel everything

Top 2014 Posts – #8 – Music Monday – Love The Way You Lie

To end the year, I’ve decided to spotlight my top 10 blog posts from 2014. I went into my stats page and looked up those articles, stories, and other published pieces that had the most number of views. Some surprised me, others did not.

Today, we move up the list to #8: Music Monday – Love The Way You Lie – Eminem and Rihanna

IMG_4138I wanted to try and schedule this one for a Monday, but alas, no can do. The timing simply didn’t work out. Oh well! “Love The Way You Lie” was one of my favorite songs I chose for a Music Monday feature this year. In fact, I still listen to it often while working on my more intense scenes. So check it out if you haven’t yet and see if it inspires your writing!

Welcome to Music Monday! As many of you know, music contributes a great deal to my writing process. Whether it’s a song’s lyrics, beat, rhythm, or tone, I find myself constantly inspired by it.

writing-to-musicThis week, I will be working on some of the most intense, emotional scenes in my manuscript. In preparation for writing these heartbreaking chapters, and dragging my characters through the mud and turning their worlds upside down, I’ve been listening to Eminem and Rihanna’s powerful hit, “Love The Way You Lie”.

Eminem-Love-the-Way-You-Lie1This song is packed with conflict, pain, and all of the emotions I need to feel while writing these explosive scenes: betrayal, fury, heartbreak, fear, regret…I also love the lyrics and music video. Both help me tap into my dark side and go to places I don’t want to go–but must.

Music Monday – Superheroes – The Script

Welcome to Music Monday! As many of you know, music contributes a great deal to my writing process. Whether it’s a song’s lyrics, beat, rhythm, or tone, I find myself constantly inspired by it.

writing-to-musicA few weeks ago, a good friend of mine introduced me to a song that has quickly become one of my new favorites: “Superheroes” by The Script.

So, if you haven’t noticed from some of my other Music Monday features, I tend to put my characters through the ringer: Betrayal. Doubt. Loss. I force them to experience the lowest of lows so they can then question whether their hearts, minds, and wills are strong enough to survive life’s curveballs.

That’s why I love “Superheroes”. It inspires the emotions my characters need to feel when dealing with the cruelties I toss in their paths: Determination. Hope. Tenacity.

484887857_640Simply put, the lyrics in this song are amazing. And they’re beyond motivating to listen to as I write those chapters where my characters must pick themselves up and dust themselves off.

She’s got lions in her heart
A fire in her soul
He’s a got a beast in his belly
That’s so hard to control
‘Cause they’ve taken too much hits
Taking blow by blow
Now light a match, stand back, watch them explode

So, if you’re like me, and you need a song to help boost your characters after you’ve thrown them for a loop, then check out “Superheroes” by The Script!

Music Monday – Ghost – Ella Henderson

Welcome to Music Monday! As many of you know, music contributes a great deal to my writing process. Whether it’s a song’s lyrics, beat, rhythm, or tone, I find myself constantly inspired by it.

writing-to-musicLast week, a friend sent me an awesome song to listen to (one that I’ll likely use for a future Music Monday feature). While listening to it, I noticed another music video on the YouTube sidebar. I’m not sure what it was that drew my attention to it–the song’s title, perhaps?–but I decided to click on it and give it a listen.

Now. I’m. Obsessed!

20140430100120!Ella_Henderson_-_Ghost“Ghost” by Ella Henderson is my new favorite song. I actually had to do some Googling to find out who Ella Henderson even was. I’d never heard of her before. Turns out she was a finalist on The X Factor…Yeah, a lot of you out there probably already knew that. Shocker, I’ve been living under a rock while I’ve been writing. 😉

Anyway, I love this song for many reasons: Ella’s deep, rich, beautiful voice. The addicting rhythm and beat. The powerful and haunting lyrics.

b8401f09b384bb46777662e7ad1c2b80The words in this song provoke so much emotion, and also provide oodles of inspiration. I keep replaying them in my mind and thinking of ways to use them to fuel my work.

Boy you never told me
True love was going to hurt
True pain I don’t deserve
Truth is that I never learn

Another reason I love this song? The music video. Talk about a writer’s candy shop. It’s dark, gritty, suspenseful, sad, hopeful, scary, tragic…The images automatically kick my brain into creative mode, and story idea after story idea pops into my head. All I want to do while watching it is grab a piece of paper and start writing!

So, if you’re looking for a fantastic song and music video to inspire you, check out “Ghost” by Ella Henderson.

Music Monday – Strip Me – Natasha Bedingfield

Welcome to Music Monday! As many of you know, music contributes a great deal to my writing process. Whether it’s a song’s lyrics, beat, rhythm, or tone, I find myself constantly inspired by it.

writing-to-musicSo, I had a completely different song picked out for today’s Music Monday, but then I heard Natasha Bedingfield’s “Strip Me” on my way to work this morning and changed my mind.

Long ago, I was absolutely obsessed with this song. Then it faded off as I became obsessed with others. This morning was the first time I’d heard it in forever and I fell back in love with it. And I knew I had to share it with you!

NatashabeddingfeildStripMe“Strip Me” is a great song to listen to when you’re creating epiphany filled moments in your story. Or when your characters decide to take a stand for what they believe in. Seeing as I’m working on the end of my book, there have been many “epiphany” and “take a stand” moments, so this song hits home and inspires me to infuse the right tone and feeling while writing.

largeI also love this song’s music video. It adds oomph to the lyrics and brings them to life in a way that’s motivating, colorful, and beautiful. And also makes you want to stand up to the enemies in your life.

So if you’re looking for a song that’s energetic, heartfelt, and perfect for those revelation moments in your story, listen to “Strip Me” by Natasha Bedingfield.

Music Monday – Explosions – Ellie Goulding

Welcome to Music Monday! As many of you know, music contributes a great deal to my writing process. Whether it’s a song’s lyrics, beat, rhythm, or tone, I find myself constantly inspired by it.

writing-to-musicOver the past year, I’ve made three playlists for my manuscript, each one with approximately 30-50 songs. Since I made the third one a couple of months ago, I’ve been listening to it way more than the others. Like, a lot more. Like, I’ve been listening to nothing else.

A few days ago, I realized I was no longer finding inspiration in any of the songs on that playlist. So, I decided to switch back to the first one I made in hopes of finding fresh inspiration on it.

And I did!

“Explosions” by Ellie Goulding popped up and I was swept away.

Ellie-Goulding-ExplosionsI’m not sure what it is about this song–or any of Ellie Goulding’s songs for that matter–but it always transports me into whatever other world I’m living in. “Explosions” has a magical combination of lyrics, rhythm, and tone that inspires me every time I hear it. It’s also bursting with raw emotion, which is exactly what I need to hear right now as I work on the current chapters in my book.

tumblr_mwa83i0WKn1qf7e5qo2_500

I have many favorites by Ellie Goulding, but “Explosions” is at the top of the list. And right now, it’s my number one pick. So, go ahead and give it a listen to see if it inspires you too!
