Welcome to Music Monday! As many of you know, music contributes a great deal to my writing process. Whether it’s a song’s lyrics, beat, rhythm, or tone, I find myself constantly inspired by it.
I had a really tough time choosing a song for today’s Music Monday, because I’m addicted to so many! It seems everyday I find a new song that inspires me. So, I did what I always do when I can’t decide: I closed my eyes, scrolled through my YouTube playlist, and clicked at random.
I ended up landing on Peggy March’s “I Will Follow Him”.
This song has always been one of my favorite malt shop hits. However, it wasn’t until a few weeks ago, as I was skimming through YouTube, that I realized I could use it for inspiration. “I Will Follow Him” has such a determined, passionate, borderline manic ring to it. I figured it’d help me develop my determined, passionate, and borderline manic female protagonist.
And I was right. It has!
As sweet and innocent as this song sounds (and very well could be), to me it’s oozing with obsession. Every time I listen to it, I imagine a delusional woman stalking her crush, bound and determined to make him hers. I mean, seriously, just look at the lyrics:
I must follow him
Ever since he touched my hand I knew
That near him I always must be
And nothing can keep him from me
He is my destiny
I love him, I love him, I love him
And where he goes I’ll follow, I’ll follow, I’ll follow
He’ll always be my true love, my true love, my true love
From now until forever, forever, forever
So, if you’re looking for a song that inspires obsessive, passionate, stalker-like characteristics, check out Peggy March’s “I Will Follow Him”.
