Music Monday – Shatter Me – Lzzy Hale and Lindsey Stirling

Welcome to Music Monday! As many of you know, music contributes a great deal to my writing process. Whether it’s a song’s lyrics, beat, rhythm, or tone, I find myself constantly inspired by it.

Well, after a couple of crazy months of writing, I’m finally returning to a semi-normal blog schedule.

I apologize for being AWOL the past couple of weeks. It’s been a little rough…But, more about that later. Let’s hop into today’s Music Monday!

So, last week I participated in the first round of the Short Story Challenge 2015. As usual, it was a tough experience, but a good one. I’ll be sharing more about it in a post tomorrow. Today, I want to share a song that helped motivate me while working on my story for the contest.

While struggling through my first draft, I took a break and pulled up YouTube in hopes of finding some much needed inspiration. And I did when “Shatter Me” featuring Lzzy Hale and Lindsey Stirling popped up.

The moment this music video began playing, I was infatuated with it. The imagery, tone, and words were exactly what I needed to see/hear to give my lagging story a swift kick in the rear.

Not only did “Shatter Me” help me tap into the raw emotions of my characters (anger, resentment, fear, sorrow), but it sparked my imagination with its amazing music video. I loved the shattering theme. It gave me some great ideas for my horror story’s morbid journey.

And, of course, “Shatter Me” has amazing lyrics with the power to inspire all kinds of emotions and ideas.

I pirouette in the dark
I see the stars through a mirror
Tired mechanical heart
Beats ’til the song disappears

Music Monday – Back in Black – AC/DC

Welcome to Music Monday! As many of you know, music contributes a great deal to my writing process. Whether it’s a song’s lyrics, beat, rhythm, or tone, I find myself constantly inspired by it.

On my way home from work on Friday afternoon, I set my iPod to shuffle, and after a few not-so-motivating songs, AC/DC’s “Black in Back” came on.

Before I knew it, I was dancing and head jamming in my car.

Well, until I came to a stoplight and noticed the guy in the car next to mine staring at me like, “Uh, what’s wrong with you?”

I hate when that happens, LOL!

Anyway, after I hit the gas pedal and left my humiliation behind, I replayed “Back in Black”. This time, I listened more than danced, and as I did, I began using the rhythm and beat to choreograph the action sequences I’m currently working on. All of the punches and kicks, twirls and whirls. Pow, pow, pow!

By the time I sat down and started writing on Saturday morning, my creative cogs were spinning fast. And they kept spinning all day. From dawn to dusk, the words poured out of me and the action sequences I’d imagined in the car sprang to life.

Music Monday – Carry On Wayward Son – Kansas

Welcome to Music Monday! As many of you know, music contributes a great deal to my writing process. Whether it’s a song’s lyrics, beat, rhythm, or tone, I find myself constantly inspired by it.

This past week, I had about five songs I was obsessed with. Three of them revolved around my male protagonist, so I decided to spotlight one of those. And the one I chose was “Carry On Wayward Son” by Kansas.

Every time I hear this rock song, I immediately begin building and shaping my main male lead. “Carry On Wayward Son” inspires traits I want this young man to have: rough and steely with a low tolerance for BS, yet also vulnerable and soft with a big heart. I kind of imagine him like a James Dean-ish character.

So far, I’ve had a lot of fun writing this character. And it’s only been more and more fun as I listen to rock songs similar to this Kansas hit, and get more and more inspired!

Music Monday – Freak Like Me – Halestorm

Welcome to Music Monday! As many of you know, music contributes a great deal to my writing process. Whether it’s a song’s lyrics, beat, rhythm, or tone, I find myself constantly inspired by it.

Last weekend I asked my brother in-law if he could make me a mix of his favorite rock/hard rock music. I don’t have much of that genre in my collection and I was feeling the need to listen to it for a certain character in my book. Less than a hour later, he came back with three CD’s worth of songs. Amongst them was Halestorm’s, “Freak Like Me”.

This song encompasses everything I was looking for to develop my secondary character. It’s fast-paced, rough, and, well, a little crazy. And that’s all perfect for this young man. He’s not quite stable, acts out all the time, and is often angry with those around him. Whenever someone attempts to control him or tells him to be more careful, he rebels. He just wants to live the life he wants, even though living it that way might be his doom.
