Welcome to Music Monday! As many of you know, music contributes a great deal to my writing process. Whether it’s a song’s lyrics, beat, rhythm, or tone, I find myself constantly inspired by it.
Well, everyone, I finally finished my second draft!
*cue confetti*
As I wrote the final climatic scenes of my book over the weekend, I found myself listening to Kerry Ellis’s rock version of the hit song, “Defying Gravity” from the musical Wicked.
There have been many variations of this song recorded over the years, but this is one of my favorites. Kerry Ellis adds so much oomph and power to “Defying Gravity” with her explosive vocals and rock n’ roll gusto. It makes me want to stand up and rebel against those trying to drag me down and hold me back. And that was the exact feeling I needed while writing my final chapters.
Not only does this song have the right tone and attitude for those “defying” moments in your story, but it has the lyrics to inspire them as well. Simply put, they’re amazing.
I’m through accepting limits
’cause someone says they’re so
Some things I cannot change
But till I try, I’ll never know!
So if you’re looking for a song that sparks rebellion, gives strength, and infuses attitude, then check out this version of Defying Gravity!
What song(s) are you in love with right now? Which one(s) offer you inspiration? Let me know! I’m always searching for songs that motivate my writing.

An attitude song that has that sound of I can kick your boo hiney is Barracuda by Heart. I can’t listen to it often but once you have in your head you get this driving action scene in your head of overcoming odds and just, as I said, kicking boo hiney.
You can find the lyric at lyricsfreak (dot) com /h/heart/barracuda_20064763.html
One other site just had the lyrics all messed up, so much so they were a joke.

I think Heart, honestly ranks up there at the top with any rock group back then. Nancy had that voice and attitude that just was amazing. Still does.

I did a post on Friday with all my favorite songs… right now… If you want i could give you the link… The post is called uncontrollable passion. 🙂 Bit more into romance right now… don’t know why…. just a phase.. But I also happen to love Guns and Roses… did a few bits of poetry on my two favorite songs by them… November Rain & don’t cry. Music can really get you into the mood if you need to write a certain scene… 🙂

Yay! I’m glad I was able to introduce you to this version. I have about…oh, I don’t know, at least 5 variations of “Defying Gravity” on my playlists. Rock, techno, instrumental…They’re all great, but I love this one by Kerry Ellis the most 🙂
Glad to hear you’re building your writing playlists! Mine have always had such a wide range of songs. There’s no rhyme or reason. If it inspires me, it gets added!
